The Student Government Association at the University of Lynchburg announced that they will be holding elections at the end of the month, with a new addition of class presidents on the ballot.

In years past SGA elections have been held for students to choose their student body president, and vice presidents of external and internal affairs.

However, with an increase in senators expressing more opportunities for leadership, the SGA cabinet brought forth the idea of introducing class presidents.

“Having a leader to represent each class will be better to guide the focus of what we do in senate and have it represent the balanced interest of the whole student body,” says VP of internal affairs, Fernanda “Angel” Evangelista.

Having class presidents will also make it more accessible for students to voice their opinions, argues Evangelista.

Freshman Dai’Dieon Colmore is running for class president for the class of 2027. “Class presidents will get to be the voice of their people. I think it’s important to have representation on every level,” says Colmore.

In addition to this new opportunity, they have opened up their director positions to the student body. Previously this has only been an option given to those who have been a part of SGA prior to becoming a director.

The cabinet ran their ideas by the student senate and staff advisor to receive approval as the inclusion of class presidents is not a decision that needs to be voted on by the student body.

Current student body president, Marques Armstrong says, “We as SGA want the student community to thrive in leadership development opportunities and we are more than grateful to provide those opportunities.”

The petition period is still open for senators who have been with SGA for two or more years, so the full ballot is not yet known.

Student candidates will be announced in the coming weeks and voting takes place on March 25 for the student body of Lynchburg to decide who their leadership will be for the 2024-2025 school year.
