Due to increased crime activity around campus, the University of Lynchburg will begin hiring off-duty Lynchburg Police Department officers to patrol the campus, according to an email sent by Vice President for University Experience and Student Success, Kristen Cooper.

She also indicated that the following changes will be made to ensure students safety:

  • Campus Safety and Security has ordered new body cameras that officers will wear during incidents they respond to. We have received some of these parts, but are still waiting on the totality of the equipment to arrive. We anticipate they will arrive in the near future.
  • Campus Safety and Security and ITR are working together to replace the Southside security cameras that are not functioning properly.
  • Campus Safety and Security is securing quotes for new and additional lighting (light poles) and additional security cameras for Southside.
  • The University is exploring best practices and options that best equip Campus Safety and Security and our officers as they maintain safety on campus.

Cooper also encouraged the campus community to download the LiveSafe app for campus safety updates.
