The presentation portion of the event covered conversation etiquette and food etiquette, including the best way to eat from a charcuterie board.

The University of Lynchburg’s Center for Career Engagement Opportunities brought students and local professionals together for a networking event titled  “Conversation Starters.”

The event unfolded in two parts: a presentation on professional etiquette for students, followed by a live networking session where Lynchburg alumni, Board of Trustees members, and local employers mingled directly with students.

Kaitlyn Regan, a junior biomedical science major, said she attended to “improve my networking skills, which is useful in any career path, so getting as much practice as possible while I have the opportunity to is really important.”

Priscilla Sparrow, a freshman commuter student, said that she “would like to be more likable so I can get a better job.”

As an introverted commuter student, Sparrow said she hoped the event would help her break out of her shell and feel more connected to campus.

During the event’s networking segment, students were treated to classical renditions of popular songs and a buffet spread of Swedish meatballs, chips and dip, fresh fruit and vegetables, and a charcuterie board, all catered by Hopwood and La Rue.

A mocktail bar serving a Schewel Sunset, featuring orange, cranberry, and pineapple juice, topped with cherries, rounded out the spread, with each student receiving one drink ticket.

The event was organized and attended by CEO Executive Director Christine Harriger, Assistant Director of Events Dawn Marfil, and Assistant Director of Career Services Jeffrey Reason as part of their new program, “Career Champions.”

Marfil said, “We help prepare students for the future, and it’s not just, you know, especially if students are getting a university education, it’s not just you training for the job; it’s also you training as a whole person.”

The Center for Career Engagement Opportunities is available to students who need assistance with their resumes, advice on applying for jobs, or general career tips.

Students who want to improve their skills in this area can visit the CEO office on the second floor of Drysdale or email them at careers@lynchburg.edu.
