As the University of Lynchburg Equestrian team prepares for the National Collegiate Equestrian Association Championship in Ocala, Florida, on April 17-18, the program’s success so far is being driven by more than just their technical skills.

For freshman Amaya Bellfield and sophomore Jessica McElhaney, the plan for transitioning to the high-stakes bracket format of NCEA depends on their continued psychological preparation and trust in consistent training.

Bellfield will enter the competition as an NCEA All-American Honorable Mention in Fences, focusing on executing her personal goals rather than besting her rivals.

“My strategy doesn’t change much when my score is directly against an opponent. I remind myself to have fun, and that is normally when I get the best outcome, just riding the ride I know and trust,” said Bellfield.

McElhaney has also seen success this season, winning the Intermediate Flat and Fences classes at Zones, attributing her wins to a balance of thoughtful work and player-coach communication.

“I try not to just go through the motions, but rather focus on fixing things correctly. My coaches are also really good about checking in and having open communication with me about what I need,” said McElhaney.

Preparing for that national stage, McElhaney highlighted the importance of staying grounded in order to compete, feeling confident and calm.

“My last ride before leaving for Zones, I kept things really relaxed. I rode my favorite horse in the halter, took him on a trail ride, and gave him a spa day. It reminded me why I love riding, instead of just focusing on winning,” she said.

As the Hornets head to the World Equestrian Center, the disciplined focus and positive mindset of the riders suggest that the team is ready to contend for a national title and finish the season with a high amount of accolades to show for it.
