For senior student-athlete Danielle Coon, excellence at the University of Lynchburg has meant pushing herself on the field, in the classroom and within her campus community.
A standout member of Lynchburg’s highly competitive field hockey program, Coon has built a reputation defined by discipline, leadership and steady commitment, qualities that earned her a nomination for the prestigious Sommerville Scholarship.
Coon, who has been a member of the Hornets’ roster throughout her college career, arrived at Lynchburg after a decorated athletic run at Menchville High School. There, she earned All-Liberty District First Team honors, was named to the All-Region Second Team and received the Leadership Award. That early foundation of determination and character has followed her into her collegiate years.
Coon’s accomplishments make clear that her Lynchburg experience reflects the same level of drive she demonstrates as an athlete. Balancing the demands of a sport with academic rigor is no small task, and her ability to excel in both spaces speaks to her resilience and work ethic; qualities often cited among the reasons students are selected as Sommerville nominees.
On the field, Coon has been part of a program known for its intensity and high expectations, helping contribute to the Hornets’ competitive success. Off the field, she is recognized by teammates and coaches for her focus, reliability, and quiet leadership; traits that reflect the spirit of service and integrity at the core of the Sommerville legacy.
Even without a direct interview response, Coon’s journey tells a compelling story: one of a student-athlete who has embraced the full Lynchburg experience, dedicating herself to her team, her academics and her growth as a leader.
Her nomination underscores the impact she has made during her time at the university and the potential she carries beyond it.
As the University of Lynchburg celebrates this year’s Sommerville finalists, Coon stands among an accomplished group of students who exemplify the values of the institution through their achievements, character, and contributions to the community.
The Class of 2026 Richard Clarke Sommerville Scholarship Award will be given on November 17, 2025 at 4:00 pm in the Daura Museum of Art.
