Lynchburg Men’s Track and Field made program history when they finished in fourth place at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Rochester, New York. In his final season at Lynchburg, head coach Jim Sprecher, who has coached the program since 2015, says that he has finally fulfilled a dream that began over a decade ago.
“Coach Reed and I had a dream 10 years ago to build a national level program that the University and alumni would be proud of,” said Sprecher. “It’s been rewarding that these individuals and their teammates got to share in this experience together.”
In first year with the Hornets, sprinter Tristan Wright helped lead the team to victory while also setting a new conference record after finishing the 60m dash in 6.74 seconds. Speaking humbly, Wright credited his teammates for helping prepare and guide him through his successful season.
“Coming into the conference I knew I couldn’t do it on my own, so I fell back on my teammates who’ve been in my position before to guide me through and to keep me in a positive mindset to accomplish new records,” Wright said.
In addition, two freshmen also secured podium finishes in Rochester. After completing his basketball season, Jamarcus Brown had a quick bounce-back, clearing a 6′ 9¾” in the men’s high jump, earning him sixth overall at the NCAA Championship.
“We just worked on getting the rust off after being in basketball season the past couple months. It wasn’t close to the best I could be, but my coach just told me to ‘do me and jump high’ with no pressure,” Brown said.
After their historic season, the Lynchburg Men’s Track and Field team will now begin their transition to the outdoors, where they aim to break more records and make history once again in their last season with Sprecher at the helm.
