On Wednesday, April 6 students of the University of Lynchburg will participate in the annual Student Scholar Showcase from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. in Schewel Hall and Hall Campus Center Ballroom.

The purpose of Student Scholar Showcase is to provide students, of all disciplines, with an opportunity to present their scholarly, research, creative, and/or service-learning projects to the campus community through various formats including oral presentations and poster presentations, according to the University of Lynchburg’s Student Scholar Showcase website.

Senior Grace Ball, an international and security studies major, will be presenting her topic “The Impact of Female Militia Units on Women’s Rights in a Society.” with her case study being the Syrian Kurdish women in the Syrian Civil War, and senior nursing major, Amanda Pugh, will present her topic on animal-assisted therapy in the Intensive Care Unit and how this therapy can be used to decrease adverse effects of patients’ hospitalization.

Ball said, “I am excited and nervous about the upcoming student scholar showcase. I have been working on my thesis for the past year and to know that all my work is about to come to a head is nerve racking. I am excited to showcase my work and to talk to my peers and advisors about my topic in a professional setting. […] I am most nervous about compiling all my information into a ten minute presentation. There will always be sections of my paper that I feel are not complete or could be improved so it is hard to just say I am done being happy with it.”

Pugh added, “I feel a little intimidated to present on this day of campus-wide research, but I am also excited to complete this event and be one step closer to graduation. The Showcase is a fun day because I can learn about the projects and interests of my friends and classmates in different fields of study. […] It’s been a while since I’ve given a presentation to an audience outside of one of my classes, so I am a little nervous to be in this new element. I feel prepared because my committee has given me valuable feedback along the way to help me sharpen and develop my project.”
