What is the campus doing to ensure your safety?
This might seem like a loaded question, but one of the best answers can be found in your pocket, or maybe even the device you are reading this on. The LiveSafe app is your one-stop-shop for many of your safety and security needs while you are on campus.
Using the app you can take advantage of tools such as SafeWalk, which lets a trusted friend track you as you walk across campus. Another useful tool is the tip feature. This allows you to make reports when something happens that makes you feel unsafe. The Livesafe app also connects you to campus resources that promote safety and security.
The University of Lynchburg Campus Safety and Security cares about the wellbeing of students, and is always looking to make our campus safer for students.
This past week myself and Emily Jackson had the pleasure of accompanying CSS Chief Esteban Soto and the Director of Physical Plant, Boyce Hamlet on a nighttime ride along where we assessed the effectiveness and brightness of the lighting on the Southside and the parking lots.
Chief Soto and Director Hamlet were incredibly receptive to our comments, and I suspect there will be some upgrades to lighting on the Southside coming in the near future. The ride along also gave us the opportunity to start the conversation about ensuring even more of the campus is protected by security cameras, security patrols, and informative signage that could direct someone to campus resources such as the emergency number for the University ((434) 544-5555).
We also discussed the blue light system on campus and how effective the service is. We realized that while the blue light system might provide peace of mind, it is relatively antiquated and the LiveSafe app is a much more effective way to report an emergency on campus.
Our job as members of Student Government is to make sure the campus meets the needs of the students. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any comments, concerns, or just want to have your voice heard. Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram @LynchburgSGA!
