The University of Lynchburg Lynchburg Swim Teams were back in action to kick off the new year during the winter break. Both the men’s and women’s teams were able to earn victories in the first month of the new year.

The Hornet men went 2-0 with victories against ODAC opponents Bridgewater College and Randolph Macon College. The final scores were 109-75 over the Eagles and 146-59 over the Yellow Jackets; both wins came on the road.

The women were able to defeat the Eagles of Bridgewater, but fell short in a tightly contested matchup against the Yellow Jackets of Randolph Macon. The final scores were 122-63 over the Eagles while the Yellow Jackets bested the Hornets 112-93 both contests being on the road for the women as well.

The Hornets now sit 15 days out from the ODAC conference meet, which will be in Greensboro NC., with one final home meet coming this Saturday, Jan. 29. This Saturday, the meet will be against Southern Virginia as the Hornets will honor their five seniors. The seniors include Claire Evko, Emma-Grace Spach, Spencer Swam, and Haydn Updike. The meet will be at the Liberty Natatorium at 11:00 am on Jan. 29.

Sophomore Maddie Corbett said, “This meet means alot for the seniors considering they have been here since the start of the program. Without them I do not think that this team would be where it is today and they are to thank for this.”

Seniors Swam and Updike all swam on the club team and have been a part of the Lynchburg Varsity Team since its inaugural season while Evko and Spach have been a part of the team since 2019, but will be graduating this year due to their stellar performances in the classroom.

Corbett said, “This meet will really help us get one last practice run before ODACs down in Greensboro.”

Evko expressed how much this team meant to her, stating, “I believe that we have been truly blessed to be a part of such an amazing team that I really can’t imagine my college career any differently.”
