At the University of Lynchburg, students were given a two month winter break to rest and relax before starting a new semester and a new year.

Many students worked, visited family members, and celebrated the holidays both at home and away. In addition to those students, many winter athletes spent more time on campus than they did at home.

For example, the swim team returned to campus after Thanksgiving in order to start training and to attend their swim meets.

Sophomore Francesca Cuchna said, “On Jan. 2, we all got on a flight to Florida. We got to spend a week there training and enjoying the weather in our free time.”

Sophomore and member of the swim team, Amanda Cash said, “Being at Lynchburg for swim while nobody else was here was interesting. It was definitely quieter without everyone on campus but it was nice and relaxing.”

Junior Christian Otero made connections with The Listening, a local organization that works with youth through the power of the arts. “My dream job is to become an adolescent psychiatrist, so working with kids of that age feels like a step in the right direction,” said Otero.

This summer, Otero will be continuing his work with The Listening through The Freedom School and providing a place for the youth of Lynchburg to learn and grow.

Some students, like senior Faith Ringressy picked up new hobbies and talents over winter break. Ringressy said, “I now know how to tattoo after break and own my own tattoo gun.” In addition to this she also passed a milestone that many seniors are facing and submitted her applications for a further degree.

This long break hopefully gave the University’s students some much deserved time to relax and restore themselves for another great semester ahead.
