“A Thousand and One Nights” In One

The highlight of the weekend for the student body will come Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. in the Memorial Gymnasium as the freshman class presents the annual Festival Ball based around the theme of “A Thousand and One Nights.” Margie Hess, chairmen of the dance committee, has announced that “Mods and the Rockers” will play at the formal affair. 

At the same hour, the Lynchburg Chapter of the Alumni Association will sponsor an Alumni dance at the Oakwood Country Club. 

Initial Service

The first regular worship in the Snidow Chapel will be given on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Allen B. Stanger presiding and Reverend Arthur Brown, Jr., of Roanoke delivering the sermon.

Athletic Program

Homecoming weekend will also include a number of athletic events, starting on Friday afternoon with a tennis match with UNC at Charlotte. This will be followed on Saturday afternoon by a second tennis match with Federick College at 1:00 p.m.

At 2:00 p.m. on the lower athletic field there will be a baseball game with Richmond Professional Institute, and a 2:30 p.m., a track meet with High Point College on the upper athletic field. 

Exhibits Open

Both the art and the science departments are providing exhibits which will be on display during the weekend in the Hebb Music Center and in Hobbs Hall. In addition several campus organizations are handling specific services for visiting parents and returning alumni including: registration, babysitting, and nursery services, playground facilities, guide service, usher service, parking directions, and refreshment concessions. 

Leslie Smith Joins Expedition 

Leslie Smith, member of the junior class, has been accepted as a participant in the Near Eastern Archaeological Expedition to Israel and other countries including Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Greece.

The Trip is sponsored by a group of colleges and seminaries with Emory Theological Seminary being the main supporter. There will be approximately 55 students from the United States on the expedition.

The expedition will be gone two months, July 1 – August 31, and six weeks of the time will be spent in Israel. The group will spend three weeks at the site of the ancient city of Tell Arad. 

Leslie and the other members of the group will be working in the diggings of the city and primarily in one of the early layers. There are seventeen different levels of the city.  

The city is located in the southern part of Israel, in the same area as Beer-Sheba and west of the Dead Sea. Tell Arad, an Isrealite fortress, was made proment by Solomon, and was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. 

At the site of the city, Leslie and the others in the group will meet 50 students from Hebrew University in Jerusalem and 50 American volunteers. At the end of the three week stay at the diggings, the group will then spend three weeks at Hebrew University studying methods of archeology. During this time at the university, Leslie and the other Americans will have the opportunity to visit students in their homes around Jerusalem.

Besides the time in Israel, the group will tour other Middle East countries visiting archeological sites, cities, and museums. Leslie has said that she is especially interested in the time that the group will spend in Athens, Greece. 

Leslie, who is a history major, has stated that she may concentrate her studies in ancient history. 

1967: WDSG Initiates Women’s Day

The Women’s Dormitory Student Government will honor a group of retiring faculty and administrative members and selected senior women at a dinner on Wednesday night, May 10th. Four faculty and administrative members are being honored this year and some eight women students. The senior women are being chosen on the basis of their contribution to campus life during the four years. 

According to Sherrard Coleman, W.D.S.G. President, “The women that we have chosen are all outstanding students within their fields of contribution, and we are really happy to honor them, as well as the faculty members who are leaving. In the future, we hope that this special day of recognition for women will become a tradition on campus.”

W.D.S.G will have a guest speaker for the occasion and each honored guest will receive a certificate of appreciation from, the entire Women’s Dormitory Student Government.
