Mystic Magic: The Limits of Manifestation

As many of our faithful readers know, for the past four years, I have worked at the Girl Scout summer camp I once attended. In the most recent summers, I ran the archery range and helped with various other tasks around camp that did not involve spending a lot of time with the girls.

I love working at camp. One of my favorite parts was that we would hire a lot of international women to come over and participate in camp life. Because of camp, half of my closest friends live on different continents.

One such friend, Herbie as she is known at camp, recently sent me some messages from England, where she works in a nursing home. In the last two years, we have discussed our own spiritual journeys, both starting with Tarot cards and eventually evolving into witchcraft.

She was having a rough time because the borders are still closed and she desperately wants to come work at camp this summer. After two years away, I can understand her dilemma. Camp has been home to Herbie for longer than it has been home for me, and I cannot imagine a summer without it.

Herbie wanted to know how to, and if she even could, manifest a way to come over during the summer.

Manifestation is one of the fundamental bases of witchcraft. In order to have your spells work, or the things you want to come to you, manifestation is key. It is also a tool used by non-witches. Basically, you explain your intentions to the universe and hope that the universe will give you what you want.

There was something I heard about a while ago about manifestations and spells. In order for them to work, you have to be willing to put in the work. If you cast a spell to lose weight, or manifest a healthier lifestyle, then you need to take steps in your life that can put you on the right track. Spending your energy just wishing it would happen does not do much.

For Herbie, I do not have a lot of hope. Manifesting money to come your way is one thing. Manifesting that the borders of two separate countries will be open amidst a gradually decreasing pandemic is another.

I am a practical person, but I did not want to crush Herbie’s spirits completely. I suggested making a sigil and carrying around some rose quartz charged with camp intentions. Herbie is basically powerless in this situation, and I know how upset she will be if she cannot come to camp, but this was all the comfort I could offer her from an ocean away.

Manifestation is a powerful thing, but without the proper channels and ability, it is as good as wishing on a star.
