On Saturday, April 1, the Lynchburg College Men’s Lacrosse team defeated Roanoke
College, who is currently ranked 16 in the nation, by a score of 17-16. LC is now 5-5, while
Roanoke is 7-3.
Since the 2010-11 season, LC and Roanoke’s Men’s Lacrosse teams have played each
other nine times. Out of these nine times, LC has won more times than Roanoke with a record of 6-3.
All of the games, including the one from Saturday, have been close. The last time the
difference between the score was greater than two was two years ago on March 28, when LC beat Roanoke 13-6.
On Saturday, the Hornets and Maroons of Roanoke battled each other until the final
seconds of the game.
They split the quarters, with them both winning two of the four. The first quarter was won by Roanoke 5-3 as well as the third quarter by a score of 6-3. LC won the second quarter 7-3 and the fourth quarter 4-2. Roanoke won 16 of the 36 face-offs, while LC won 20.
The game began with a score from sophomore attackman Andrew Thomas who had a
total of three goals during the night. Thomas made three shots of only three taken, giving him a shooting percentage of 100.
Alongside Thomas was fellow sophomore attackmen Evan Lombardo. Lombardo led the
Hornets in scoring with a total of four goals. Seven other players for LC scored, senior
midfielders Daniel Owens, Harrison Brennan and Joey Giannaras; junior attackman Shayne O’Brien and Colin McGuire; sophomore attackman Logan Adams and first-year midfielder Kevin Rogers.
Brennan scored the game-winning goal for his team after Lombardo scored the goal to tie it. The Hornets made 17 of 31 shots, giving them a shooting percentage of 54, and they had a total of 11 assists.
Ginnaras scored two goals during the night and had this to say about LC’s win against
Roanoke and how they plan to continue from here:
“Getting a huge win over our rival was electric! It felt like we earned that win because of
all the hard work and preparation we put into this game. The locker room after the game was wild and everyone was fired up. We’re going to take this win and learn from it. Sure there were a lot of things we did great in that win but there are also things that we didn’t do so great. We are going to learn from those mistakes to get better. We are going to focus on the little things and get better each and every practice from here on out.”
Both teams endured penalties that resulted in them being down a player. Roanoke had
two infractions that lasted 30 seconds each. LC had four infractions, three that lasted for one minute and one lasting for 30 seconds.
The LC penalties came from holding by sophomore midfielder Nick Willertz and slashing
by defensive sophomore Chris Tibbetts, senior Cole Barrett and junior goalie CJ Santora.
During these penalties, Roanoke capitalized on LC being down a man and scored each
time. LC was able to score during one of Roanoke’s two penalties. Santora also had 13 saves for the Hornets.
The next game for the Men’s Lacrosse team is on the road against Shenandoah
University’s Hornets on Wednesday, April 5.
