At the University of Lynchburg, graduate counseling interns aren’t just observing sessions; they’re leading them and gaining hands-on experience while expanding mental health support for students on campus.
Maria Caro, a graduate counseling intern, said this internship sparked her passion for counseling as a career.
Now working directly with clients, Caro said she focuses on creating a safe space where they can be heard and supported, guiding students rather than offering quick solutions.
Unlike many programs that are mainly interns observing, Lynchburg’s internship opportunities give students immediate responsibility in a clinical setting.
Caro said she manages her own clients and sessions while under supervision. She says the experience has shaped her into a stronger counselor.
Tiffany Boydoh, assistant director of counseling services at the university, said the program stands out with its hands-on training and strong supervision.
“We are able to record their sessions and give them really valuable feedback to grow and develop them as counselors,” Boydoh said.
Interns also play a key role in meeting student demand for counseling services.
“With even just the staff that we have, we find that there are times we are all significantly busy,” Boydoh said, crediting the interns with helping the center avoid waitlists and strict session limits.
While some students may hesitate to work with an intern, Boydoh said most quickly become comfortable because the interns are relatable.
“The role can be challenging, especially maintaining boundaries on a small campus, but building trust with clients is what matters most,” Caro said.
This program continues to provide valuable training for future counselors while also expanding mental health support across campus.
