Last Monday afternoon on the Lynchburg College athletic field the faculty of the Westover institution proved themselves superior in another phase of college life by decisively beating the good, but overconfident sophomore softball champs, 6-5.
John Lankford, freshman star, temporarily promoted to professorship, helped the faculty considerably by playing a fine defensive-offensive game under the handicap of a broken finger. The fleet Lankford personally broke up several desperate attempts by the Sophs to score by pulling down drives ordinarily labelled for base hits. A beautiful shoe-string catch of a drive off the bat of Katz climaxed and ended the game, leaving Lankford the holder of individual honors for the contest. With two out and none on in the fourth frame Lankford exhibited his powers at the plate by pounding out a well directed drive into right field, and which went for a triple, and Lankford scored on an error by Catcher Marsh.
Coach Glenn Rardin of the Hornets, one-time Lynchburg College athletic great, played a fine defensive game behind the plate, but was robbed of several base hits by the roaming third baseman of the Sophs, Manager Eddie “Spot” Bruffey, who incidentally, played a better defensive game than usual.
Professor Hunter held down the “hot corner” unusually well for the faculty, picking up several simmering grounders and tossing the runners out at the initial sack.
“Twas too bad, but more or less inevitable–How can one or even an aggregation beat professors?”
