Welcome back to campus, Hornets! I hope everyone is settling in and getting back into the swing of things after summer. This semester, I’m shaking up my weekly Letterboxd Top Four Films.
Instead of sticking strictly to movies, I’ll be sharing the top four pieces of media I’ve consumed each week. That could mean films, TV shows, books, music, articles, basically anything that caught my attention and stuck with me throughout the week.
Here are my Four Favorites from this week:
“Man’s Best Friend” – Sabrina Carpenter

As someone who has loved Sabrina Carpenter since she was on Girl Meets World, I was worried that this album was going to fall short, especially in the shadows of Short n’ Sweet and emails I can’t send.
While this isn’t my favorite Sabrina album, it has grown on me after a few more listens. What I love most about “Man’s Best Friend” is that it completely subverts expectations.
The cover art had critics and the outrage mob ready to call it conservative, subservient propaganda, but instead, we got a bubblegum pop record about how stupid men are. Honestly, what’s not to love?
My favorites from the album: Nobody’s Son, Go-Go Juice, House Tour and Goodbye.
Clue (1985)

This is definitely not a piece of media that I discovered this past week, but it is one of my all-time favorites.
Everything about this movie is perfect to me.
From the pacing, to the physical comedy, to the quick wordplay that you might miss until after the first few watches to the three different endings, which gives the film the “game-like” feel of its source material, everything about this film just works.
This is a film that I can watch a million times and still find something new to giggle at.
Adventure Time

When my boyfriend and I first started dating, he convinced me to watch his favorite show, Adventure Time. I was a bit unsure, since I knew that it was a show on Cartoon Network and it must be for children.
I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that it would become one of my absolute favorite shows.
Yes, Adventure Time is a kids’ show, but it is also one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking pieces of media I have ever consumed.
If you haven’t seen it, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s funny, it’s inspiring, and it has some of the best character development in any show I’ve seen.
I am also currently watching the spinoff series, Fiona and Cake, so I imagine that will be in a Four Favorites very soon!
“Devotions” – Mary Oliver

As a lifelong fan of poetry, I am surprised it took me so long to discover the genius that is Mary Oliver.
Devotions is an anthology of Oliver’s work from 1963 to 2015. I flip through the pages at least once a week, discovering a new poem that will most definitely become my identity until I find another one of her poems to obsess over.
She had such a unique way of describing the most mundane scenes, making even a mud puddle seem like the most beautiful thing in the world.
My favorite poems in this collection are: Wild Geese, Blueberries, Of The Empire, Red and Self-Portrait.
I hope you enjoyed the first edition of Four Favorites. Keep up with what I’m watching on Letterboxd, what I’m listening to on Spotify and what I’m reading on Goodreads.
