University of Lynchburg sports has gotten off to a hot start this semester, with all four of its in-season teams undefeated after opening weekend. But its most anticipated sport has yet to even play a match.
This semester, the university will begin recruiting for its first ever men’s wrestling program, which will be led by head coach Vinny Barber.
Barber, who recently coached both the men’s and women’s wrestling teams at the University of the Ozarks in Arkansas, is looking forward to a strong start to the inaugural season. He has expressed his high expectations for the team and coaching staff, with his eyes set on an NCAA championship and an ODAC title.
“Building this program around high-performing, high-quality kids is paramount to our future success. The Standard will be the Standard….A standard of excellence. We want High Performers….Water Seeks its Own Level!” said Barber.
Assistant coach for men’s wrestling, Sam Hillegas, will be collaborating closely with Lynchburg’s Athletic Department as they grow their new program.
“Being surrounded by like-minded people and coaches who have succeeded in their respective sports is awesome. I consider them as mentors to myself and look forward to the insight they have for me in my career as a coach,” he said.
Barber has strengthened the roster with the addition of former Ferrum College athlete Avery Hall, whose experience and competitive drive bring added energy to the program’s early foundation.
“What I’m most excited about is being part of the foundation, helping build this team from just a few wrestlers into not only a full roster, but a program that can compete at a national level,” said Hall.
Lynchburg’s new wrestling program is poised to make a significant impact within the next year, with the start of its season scheduled for Fall 2026. With focused leadership from the coaching staff and steady support behind the scenes, the team enters its first season ready to compete with power and purpose.
