Since its relocation last semester, the new Mosaic Lounge has been on a mission to promote community at the University of Lynchburg.

Formerly located on the second floor of Drysdale Student Center, the Mosaic Lounge is now located on the second floor of Schewel Hall. Despite initial reservations about the relocation, affinity groups believe that the new space is ideal to host students, events, and foster creativity.

In its first year, the Mosaic Lounge hopes to play a larger role in creating a welcoming space for students. Alexis Scott, the Assistant Director of Student Diversity Initiatives, believes that students will see the new space as an ideal location for all activities.

“I want students to feel that this space is a nice environment to hangout, study, unwind, or play video games,” Scott said.

Assistant Vice President of Operations Michael Vaughan noted that “the lounge is a larger room than its prior space,” emphasizing that affinity groups will be allowed to host larger events and expand their outreach.

Since relocating, the Mosaic Lounge has noticed an increase in student engagement. Josiah Randles, president of the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA), shared that the move to Schewel has resulted in more exposure for the space.

“Seeing new students has been a beneficial thing because each student brings a fresh personality into the community,” said Randles. “More students now have access to this area, and it is not only used by affinity groups, but other organizations and clubs are now utilizing this space.”

Inside the Mosaic Lounge, students can watch movies, lounge on comfortable couches, and even play a game of table tennis.

When designing the new lounge space, Scott collected feedback from students in affinity groups to help decide which furniture and decor would make the room more appealing and inviting to students.

With a commitment to building community, the space continues to develop into a welcoming environment for all students.
