I have never been sure of my true purpose in life. Maybe I am meant to be a well-respected journalist, but maybe not. I could end up as the owner of an antique shop or a record store or even as a shepherd living in the Italian countryside. (By the way, all of these would be just as great as a journalist.) Regardless, I have always been confident that I am meant to love.
Love is more than just a feeling of affection for another person. It manifests itself everywhere, from the love we have for our pets to the love we have for our favorite hobbies. I feel now more than ever that the world needs more love. Here are some songs that make loving easy.
The Ultimates, “Why I Love You” (1971)
Soul music has always had a special place in my heart, but unfortunately, most soul music has been released without getting the recognition it deserves. This record went unnoticed for decades until it resurfaced online a few years ago. This record, like all the others on this list, expresses the emotions of love so beautifully and poetically.
“If love could only be spoken, without hearts being broken, then I’d say I love you.”
The Beach Boys, “Please Let Me Wonder” (1965)
I have never been more moved by a song than when I first heard this record. Love can be a complex emotion to express to someone, and this record encapsulates the infatuation and anxiousness surrounding confessing your love to someone. Only Brian Wilson could create such a masterpiece of a song.
“For so long, I’ve thought about it, and now I just can’t live without it, this beautiful image I have of you.”
Bee Gees, “How Deep Is Your Love” (1977)
No band harmonizes better than the Bee Gees do. Led by Barry Gibb’s falsetto, this song is the perfect blend of poetic writing and ethereal singing.
“You know the door to my very soul. You’re the light in my deepest, darkest hour. You’re my savior when I fall.”
Ricky Nelson, “I Need You” (1968)
I have always struggled with expressing my emotions, and from start to finish, this record is filled with lyrics that perfectly reflect my thoughts about love towards another person. Love is simple, yet we tend to complicate it so much that we avoid it. If there is one song from this list that is perfect to dedicate to that special someone, it is this one.
“In this cruel world of showers, you remind me of the flowers that I once knew so long ago. Like the leaves that fall in autumn, your arms I’m lost without them. Oh please don’t go, I need you so.”
Ann Peebles, “Until You Came Into My Life” (1974)
This gem of a record made me emotional when I first heard it over two years ago. Ann Peebles’ performance on this record comes straight from the heart and delivers it gracefully. I also have to shout out the background singers in this song, which helps add another layer of true soul that makes this a classic.
“I never knew the meaning of true love until you came into my life.”
