A group of students from the University of Lynchburg had the opportunity to explore the rich cultural diversity of New York City during spring break through the CHAMPS program.
This was an informative yet fun initiative by the school’s Office of Equity and Inclusion.
The Champs program allows students to experience different cultures firsthand.
For many, such as the students who visited iconic sites like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and biked around Central Park, it was their first time in the city.
Beyond the adventures, they gained a deeper appreciation for how diversity enhances a community, making it more interesting and inclusive.
The CHAMPS program is under the Office of Equity and Inclusion at the University of Lynchburg.
This program serves as a supportive initiative aimed at fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for incoming freshmen, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
Hermasia Law-Jackson said, “The purpose of CHAMPS is to be an ally to all minorities and just to be a friend/family/guide to the incoming freshman class, and talk to them about college life since it is a lot different than high school.”
For Pooja Adhikari, two standout moments from the New York City Champs trip were visiting the iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art and biking around Central Park.
At the Met, she was amazed by the breadth of artistic treasures from civilizations across the globe, all housed under one roof.
“The highlights of the trip for me were our visit to the breathtaking Metropolitan Museum of Art and biking through the iconic Central Park,” recalled Adhikari.
“At the Met, I was in awe wandering through galleries that housed treasures from across the world’s cultures and civilizations, all under one roof,” she added.
Prabigya Kafle encourages her peers to participate in the CHAMPS program. Kafle explained, “The community is very positive, friendly, and welcoming. If you want to see different places and have fun during your college time, you only need to be involved in something. The fun will follow itself.”
Her excitement didn’t stop there. The New York City experience with CHAMPS left a profound impact, motivating her to become more actively involved after the trip.
In the end, the New York City CHAMPS trip was far more than just a spring break getaway – it was an invaluable opportunity for personal growth and cultural awakening.
By immersing themselves in the city’s rich diversity through activities like museum visits, neighborhood tours, and simple everyday interactions, these students expanded their perspectives in profound ways.
They discovered the vibrancy various backgrounds can bring to a community when embraced with openness and respect.
