The theater department at the University of Lynchburg debuted their production of The Seussical this past week and did not disappoint.
The play is based on the book Horton Hears a Who, written by Dr. Seuss, and was performed phenomenally on March 1-2.
Each of the actors performed their roles to perfection, some even receiving praise in the midst of the production.
One to note was the character the Sour Kangaroo, played by Temika Younger, who, while not only having a lot of stage time, stole the show every time she sang.
As well, the on-stage chemistry of Arilyn Webster and Josiah Randles, who played Gertrude and Horton respectively, really held the attention of the audience.
The relationship between The Cat in the Hat, played by Michael Tock, and Jojo, played by child actor Lawson Neufeld, moved the story along very well and brought the childlike imagination of Dr. Seuss to the stage.
The Wickersham Brothers, played by Connor Duryea, Nico Thomas and Bobby Vinson, were the most influential in getting the audience to laugh and drive home the comedic aspects of the play.
When it comes to the set, it was designed in a way that made you feel as though you were looking at a page ripped right from one of Dr. Seuss’ books, and took nothing away from the story.
The costumes were simple, yet effective in bringing the characters to life.
While there were few actors who did not express a lot of emotion within a few of the scenes, this could only be attributed to the many great performances that they put on prior.
Overall, the spring musical did not disappoint, and while was childish in nature, was a wonderful break from the busy life of a college student.
