The 48th Moore & Giles Virginia 10 Miler brought athletes from across the globe to Lynchburg to kick start fall 2022.
More than 2,200 participants from 33 different states and five different countries all competed in the 10 Mile Run, 4+Mile Run or 4+Mile Walk on Sept. 24.
There were also over 1,000 volunteers representing area nonprofits, colleges and universities, and civic organizations including a large number of University of Lynchburg student and faculty volunteers.
History was made this year when Monicah Ngige of Lansing, MI set the female 10 mile course record completing the race in 53 minutes and 16 seconds. According to http://www.virginiatenmiler.com, this year’s race boasted one of the most talented field’s in years.
This year’s overall champion was Melkamu Wube from Lansing, MI. He completed the race in 47 minutes and 18 seconds.
Not only does the Virginia 10 Miler race provide elite runners a chance to compete, but it also engages the local Lynchburg community.
University of Lynchburg graduate student Jordan Nilson has been volunteering at the race since the fall of her freshman year.
Nilson said, “The Virginia 10 Miler race is something I look forward to every year since I have attended school here in Lynchburg. It brings people from all over the world and country to the city of Lynchburg and it is a really special thing to help out be a part of.”
University of Lynchburg senior, Alla Daniel, who has also been volunteering at the race since her freshman year said, “The Virginia 10 miler is something that I feel is a way to give back to the community and help encourage and cheer on runners who come to race from all over the world.”
Many different Lynchburg athletic teams got up bright and early on Saturday morning to volunteer and help out the community including the men’s and women’s lacrosse team, the swim team, and the track and cross country team.
