Brandon Pond is pitching a great game.
On Fox Field, the boys of summer are taking advantage of a great 2021 season and using every ounce of momentum and carrying it into the 2022 season. The Lynchburg Baseball Team is off to a hot start this year. The Hornets are off to a 6-1 start including two wins over top 15 ranked opponents this year.
The Hornets started the season off in Alabama with three ranked opponents coming out of the weekend 2-1 before coming home to win four straight against Averett and a weekend series against Dickinson.
In Alabama, senior starting pitcher Brandon Pond performed well enough to be named a part of the D3baseball.com team of the week throwing six shutout innings against number 15 ranked Trinity College.
Pond said, “It was a great way to start off the year as a team earning confidence in these wins. Last year we started slow and it took us some time to get into a rhythm. The goal this year was to start hot and stay hot.”
The Hornets started the 2021 season losing six out of their first eight games.
Senior Jackson Harding said, “This team has been building up to this moment for a couple years now. Coach Jones has put us in a situation where we can be successful but at the same time be challenged and that is how we as a team can get better.”
The Hornets will face a multitude of challenges this season including CNU, Randolph Macon, Shenandoah and Tufts.
Harding added, “Last year we won the ODAC in a year where there was a lot of uncertainty. I think that has given this team a sense of where we want to be as a team and program and we hope that we can do it again and make a deeper push into the NCAA Tournament.”
The Hornets continued to build off the weekend in Alabama with a series sweep against Dickinson and now look to a road contest at William Pace today at 3:00 p.m. before coming home to Fox Field for a three game series against York College.
