Being single on Valentine’s Day is a very common trend. While no one wants to be single on this day of love, it is sometimes unavoidable. This could be due to the fact that we are living through a pandemic, or because we are just better off on our own.
Regardless of the reason, the concept of relationships is constantly shoved down the throats of those of us who happen to be single at the time. This is mostly done through the use of movies and tv shows that constantly show these loving relationships in action.
Luckily, there are also movies that just so happen to be Anti-Valentine, and are perfect for those of us who are taking the holiday to love ourselves.
How to Be Single follows Alice(Dakota Johnson) after she decides to take a break from a long-term relationship. She moves to New York straight out of college and takes up a job at a law firm where she meets a woman named Robin(Rebel Wilson). The pair are polar opposites, yet with Robin’s advice, Alice begins to embrace her single life and learn more about herself.
Heathers(1989), directed by Michael Lehmann, centers around high school senior Veronica Sawyer(Winona Ryder) as she navigates her growing relationship with the mysterious JD(Christian Slater). Everything seems to be going well until we later learn that JD has an odd hobby for killing people. The two kill a few of their most popular classmates, making them look like suicides, Veronica decides to end the relationship and save her school from an explosive ending. The movie is very well known for the powerful personalities and costume choices, as well as it’s iconic quotes and is an essential movie for singles night.
The final Anti-Valentine Day movie is Kill Bill Vol.1, directed by Quentin Tarantino. The Bride(Uma Thurman), a former assassin, wakes from a coma 4 years after her ex-lover Bill(David Carradine) attempts to kill her on her wedding day. Fueled by revenge for herself, the child she never had, and her wedding party, she begins to hunt down everyone who had a hand in ruining her big day. Accompanied by amazing fight scenes and plot twists, Kill Bill Vol 1 is an iconic movie that is a necessary watch for all movie lovers.
While some may enjoy a good rom-com for Valentine’s Day, sometimes the best way to spend the day involves a different kind of humor, or… serious felony? We won’t judge you. Enjoy your Valentine’s day, whether it involves embracing yourself or someone else.
