The University of Lynchburg Women’s Tennis Team has earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ODAC conference tournament.
Previously, University of Lynchburg lost to the nationally ranked Washington and Lee (W&L) Generals, but the Hornets are looking forward to returning the favor against the Generals in the ODAC tournament.
Director of Tennis Christopher Johnson is proud of where his team is at. “We talk a lot about grit and perseverance,” he said. “I am proud because everyone on the team has demonstrated these attributes in the last few games of the regular season. We are looking forward to hosting our quarterfinal matches.”
Caroline Guill, a senior and captain, seemed unaffected by the team’s recent loss to W&L, explaining, “W&L is an elite team, so our season’s success is not affected by the loss against W&L. Playing against a high-level team like that gives the players on our team confidence to attack the ball in doubles and singles. The confidence that we gain from intense rallies with high level players translates to other matches. This was evident in the match against Randolph Macon the next day. We were able to beat them 9-0 with fairly clean sweeps across each doubles and singles court.”
Guill highlighted the team’s mentality ahead of the ODAC tournament. She said, “Every match we play, we will show up to the ODAC tournament ready to leave it all on the court. Our goal as a team is to make it to the ODAC finals. In order to do this, we have to keep our focus on the quarterfinal and semifinal matches which do not include W&L. This season has not been focused on what W&L does. Instead, we have been focused on developing our style of play, so we can improve with each match.”
Ellen Druebbisch, a senior and captain said, “It would be nice to have some matches and have fans support us.” She continued, “I think it will take a lot for us to win the ODAC. Obviously, this is our goal, but it is difficult to do so with a team like W&L in our conference. We will give it our best effort. We will just be happy to play one last match as a team this season.”
