On Sunday, Nov. 10 at 12:00 p.m., the University of Lynchburg Women’s Basketball program defeated Meredith College by a score of 81-60. This game was the first of the regular season, and they began their campaign with a big win.
Third-year guard for the Lady Hornets, Maggie Quarles, started off the game by scoring a three-pointer. In total, she scored 15 points in the game. Second-year transfer student and guard, Alissa Smalls, was the highest scorer in the game with 18 points.
“Getting a win at home was an awesome experience. We had a really balanced attack and showed that we’re capable of and truly played together as a team! Of course, there are always things to work on and improve at, but – on Sunday – we showed our grit and toughness to get the job done,” remarked Quarles.
With this win, one exciting statistic about the game was that Coach Abby Pyzik-Smith, the head coach for the lady hornets basketball team, received her 150th career win.
The lady hornets basketball team were ranked fourth in the preseason rankings for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). They are looking forward to getting better each and every game as one ‘team’ unit. Third year guard Carolyn Noe insisted, “It was a great start to the season and a solid team win. We’ve been focusing a lot on ‘team,’ and it definitely showed for our first home game. The stronger the ‘team’ unit, the stronger our communication is and the better we are.” The program’s first ODAC game will be on Wednesday, November 20 away at Hollins University at 7:00 p.m.
Later this week, the team will travel to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. On Friday, November 15, the team will play Emory University at 6:00 p.m., and on Saturday, November 26, the team plays Colorado College at 3:00 p.m. The game will be available online for you to watch!
The Lady Hornets next home game will be on Monday, November 25 against Eastern Mennonite University at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played on Wayne Proffitt Court in the Turner Gymnasium. Please come out to support your Lady Hornets!
