Many college students dread the thoughts of the word “money.” Questions go through your head like, “How am I going to make any money while I am in college?,” “What am I going to do if I have no money for gas?”, or “Do I have to ask my parents for money?” There is a lot of things that college students can do to make a little extra money while in college, and there are places that give out discounts when college students have their “student ID.”
College jobs on campus are an easy way to make money while taking classes. There are many jobs offered at the University of Lynchburg in different fields of work such as: landscaping, social media representatives for different departments, dining services, coffee shops, information technology and resource, and the athletics department. These jobs are a good way to get to know many different people and have resources on campus when you need them. Jobs on campus can also help you get experience in the field that you want to work in once you graduate college.
There are plenty of jobs off-campus that are offered to college students. Restaurants and fast food places are always looking for college students to come work for their businesses. Parents are always looking for babysitters or caregivers during the school year. Sometimes parents just want to get an evening away from the kids, and that is where you can make a little money on the weekends. Many “dog parents” look for people to walk their dogs during the week or dog sit on the weekend and that is also an extra way of making money.

If you are one of those college students who just would rather focus on their studies than have a job, there are many discounts for college students. You know that “student ID” you got from your college or university? Believe me when I tell you that, most stores will definitely give you a discount with that ID. Most movie theaters, such as AMC, Cinemark, and Regal Cinemas, give discounts with your “student ID.” Apple gives you a free pair of Beats headphones with a Mac purchase. Trust me, I got that deal and it is real. The same applies to many restaurants and food chains such as: Arby’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Burger King, Chick-Fil-A, Chipotle, Dairy Queen, Dunkin’ Donuts, McDonald’s, Subway, Taco Bell, Waffle House, and, one of my favorites, Bojangles.
Clothing companies give college students discounts as well. Some of these includes: Aerie, Champ Sports, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, Goodwill, JCrew, Kate Spade, Toms, Urban Outfitters, and Vineyard Vines. Some o f the local boutiques give student discounts as well. If you travel home, many travel companies will give you discounts as well. Gas cards come in handy when saving a few dollars on gas while traveling. If you like to travel by train or bus, Greyhound and Amtrak give discounts as well. If you like to use Apple Music or Spotify, they give college students discounts as well.
There are so many ways for college students to make money or just to have discounts at certain places they like to go shop. It is hard to ask your parents for money, so that is why there are opportunities for you to have a job on campus. These jobs can help you have experiences in the work field that you wish to work in, once you graduate. These jobs are also great for your resume. If you are one of those students who would rather not have a job, that is okay. Volunteer instead or get involved with things on campus so that you can have experiences while here at the University of Lynchburg.
