The Lynchburg College softball team has started off their 2018 season on a high note. They currently are 11-3 overall and have a winning percentage of .786. After starting off 8-0, the lady Hornets were ranked 19 in the NFCA’s (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) top 25.
They were also ranked fourth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason poll. Although no conference games have been played yet, with their current overall record, LC is tied for fourth place with Eastern Mennonite University.
Their last two games were a double header against Rochester University. The two teams split the double header, with each taking home a victory. The first game went to LC, with a final score of 6-3.
The Hornets were led by sophomore Sarah Commons with two runs and by junior teammate Mackenzie Chitwood, seniors Leslie Bourgeois and Mackenzie Mount and first year Haylee Wood, all with one run each.
In the second game, Rochester allowed no runs to be scored by the Hornets and beat LC 5-0. Throughout both games, a great performance on the defensive side for the Hornets came from senior Conner English who notched six strikeouts against Rochester and had no errors in the field.
The next match-up for the 19 ranked lady Hornets is against Greensboro College on March 15, weather permitting. Conference play for LC will not begin until March 21 against Randolph College.
