A new restaurant is set to open in March along the Fifth Street corridor in downtown Lynchburg. Daughters and Sons will offer Sicilian-style pizza with handmade dough that takes up to three days to ferment.
In addition to serving pizza, Daughters and Sons will offer a variety of sandwiches, salads and meat and cheese platters. The pizza that they offer will rotate occasionally and there will be vegetarian pizza options available. They will also be serving beer on tap and wine by the glass. It seems as though the wine selection will be taken seriously there, as they are in the process of building a wine cellar underneath the restaurant.
The establishment will be at the former Speakertree location. The space has been stripped back down to its bones which yielded a few surprises, like Virginia artist Thomas Dean’s artwork on the walls. Daughters and Sons intends to preserve these works and seal them to become a part of the décor.
It is the latest food establishment to join the Fifth Street corridor. From barbecue to coffee to pizza, this area seems to be back on the rise. The Fifth Street Community Development Corporation has worked hard for years to breathe life back into the area. The Fifth Street CDC’s master plan is to “reclaim the street so that it serves all of the community’s needs.”
The owner of Daughter and Sons plans to help do just that. In an interview with the News and Advance, owner Jason Arbusto stated “I think there’s a need for [pizza] in this specific area. There are other pizza places, but this type of pizza is unique.”
Arbusto grew up in Lynchburg, VA but has moved around quite a bit throughout his chef career. He has worked in Paris, New York and California, but has returned to his home in Lynchburg with his wife and two children. According to his website, he felt inspired to come back to Lynchburg because “The sense of community, growing cultural and food scene here is what makes this area so unique to raise a family and enjoy what central Virginia has to offer.”
Arbusto is also the owner of Arbusto Food Group, which is a “local, chef driven hospitality group specializing in creating amazing food experiences” according to the website. They offer services that extend from catering to office lunches to at-home prepared meal service. They also offer cooking classes, for those looking to hone their skills or need a fun date idea. They are located on Forest Rd.
