Political Perspective: Protect the Land

Carter Elliot, Staff Writer~

This past week President Donald Trump announced that the administration will be making the largest elimination of public land in United States history.

In total, nearly two million acres of protected land will be stripped away, which will make room for industrialization, and “the highest density of cultural resources in the country is now at risk.”

Almost instantly after the announcement was made Patagonia made a powerful move by putting national interests above company profits. The website went black and it read “The President stole your land.” Patagonia has been fighting for public land for nearly thirty years and they continue to be a massively influential company. Every year, Patagonia donates one percent of their profits to environmental organizations that pledge to make a difference in the world.

The elimination of land from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments is just the beginning of what this administration plans on doing to the environment, and that is something that we can not let happen. In our lifetime, we have seen rising temperatures, rising sea levels and real climate change. In times like this, we can’t be making policy decisions that damage the environment; rather, we need to be making laws and enacting policies that will save our environment. With companies like Patagonia on our side, now is the time to take action and stand up for our environment.
