On Monday Sept. 25, Tom Perriello visited Lynchburg College. The event drew out approximately 100 people and received an overwhelming amount of support from the student body, the faculty and the local community.

Tom spoke on several topics, including his time in Congress where he aided the passing of the Affordable Care Act and helped write a bill to end domestic violence on college campuses.

He also spoke on the events that took place in Charlottesville this summer. He was there during the riots, where he was pepper sprayed and assaulted by white supremacists.

He mentioned the hate group that was on our campus and made it clear to the students that we can not ignore this type of behavior; we must condemn and actively voice against it.

After his speech, Perriello answered questions from students, many of whom were thoroughly impressed with his answers. Throughout his whole speech, Perriello had an overarching message to students to get politically involved. He stated that “this election is not just a four-year election, it’s a fourteen-year election” due to the fact that redistricting will occur in the commonwealth during the next governor’s term.

Our generation is the least politically active generation of all time and we have the opportunity to change the political landscape for the next few decades. With National Voter Registration day being this week, it is your duty as a citizen to register and get out to vote!
