On Friday, Sept. 22, the Lynchburg College Field Hockey team started off their weekend with a win at home against York College. The following day, Sept. 23, they lost to Kean University on Liberty University’s field. These two games moved LC’s overall record to 6-2 but did not affect their conference record.

LC’s game against York was a fight to the end. The game went into overtime and ended with a final score of 3-2. The first two goals that came within regulation time were scored by junior midfielder Nikki Simpano and junior forward Isabella Eldridge. The game-winning goal in overtime was scored by first-year forward Jackie Lerro. On the defensive end of the game, sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Chapman had nine saves for the Hornets.

Lerro had this to say about scoring the winning goal:

“Scoring the game winning goal was a great feeling, especially since our team came from behind to win. Our hard work the whole game paid off, and to feel the excitement from everyone was a feeling I will not forget.”

The loss to Kean ended with a score of 3-2. Kean is ranked 19 nationally and now has an overall score of 9-0. The two goals scored for LC came from Simpano and Lerro. LC scored the first two goals of the game but were unable to keep Kean from coming back and topping LC’s two goals with three of their own.

The next game for field hockey will be their first conference game of the season. They will play at  Washington & Lee on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m.

Looking ahead to their first conference game, Simpano stated:

“As conference play commences this week, I’m looking forward to the team putting all of our hard work to the test. We’ve learned a lot from our non-conference opponents, and have worked hard during practice to keep our opponents on their toes in hopes to clutch the top seed in playoffs.”
