Women’s Soccer Dominates on Shellenberger Field

This past weekend, the Lynchburg College Women’s Soccer Team won the annual Shellenberger Classic, which was hosted at LC. This year the three other teams alongside LC were Salisbury University, Wheaton College and Roanoke College.

LC went 2-0 this weekend by defeating both Salisbury and Wheaton. They did not play against Roanoke, although they were also included in this weekend’s games.

LC first faced Salisbury and defeated them by a score of 1-0. The only goal scored during this game came from junior forward Sarah Hammock near the 60 minute mark of the game. The assist on this goal came from sophomore midfielder Georgie Duggan. Duggan fed Hammock a through ball which allowed Hammock to chip the ball over the head of the Salisbury keeper who attempted to charge at her.

The next game for LC was against Wheaton. This game ended at a score of 2-0 with LC on the winning side. Hammock added to her stat sheet as she scored her third goal of the season in the second game of the weekend.

The second goal against Wheaton came from junior midfielder Kennedy Jakubek. While Wheaton took more shots than LC, 11-9, LC allowed no goals. Junior goalkeeper Delia LoSapio saved all five of the shots-on-goal by Wheaton.

LC gained the title of the Shellenberger Classic this weekend and showed why they were ranked first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) preseason poll.

After this weekend’s games, LC’s Women’s Soccer team is now 4-0 overall and has a total of three shutouts, after allowing only one goal so far.

The next game for LC’s Women’s Soccer will be at Salem College on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 12 p.m.
