Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger delivered the Democratic rebuttal to President Donald Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address, centering her response on a question she said Americans should be asking themselves: Is the president working for you?

Speaking from Colonial Williamsburg, Spanberger challenged the president’s depiction of the nation’s economy and overall progress. While the president highlighted job growth and economic expansion, Spanberger said many families remain burdened by high grocery prices, housing costs and health care expenses.

“The measure of any presidency is whether it improves the lives of the people it serves,” Spanberger said, urging viewers to look beyond statistics and assess their own financial stability.

Throughout her remarks, Spanberger emphasized affordability. She said inflation and cost-of-living pressures continue to strain working families, even as broader economic indicators show improvement. She called for targeted tax relief for middle-class households and small businesses, as well as stronger oversight of federal spending.

Spanberger also addressed immigration and national security. She criticized what she described as divisive rhetoric and policies that create uncertainty for communities and local governments. At the same time, she called for practical border solutions and bipartisan cooperation in Congress.

In addition, she questioned whether the administration’s priorities reflect the needs of everyday Americans. Spanberger said leadership should be judged by outcomes that are felt in homes and communities, not by applause lines in Washington.

Her rebuttal repeatedly returned to its central theme, asking Americans to consider their own circumstances. Are their costs lower? Do they feel more secure? Is their government responsive to their concerns?

As the political debate continues, Spanberger framed her response as a call for accountability and results. Her message was direct: voters should decide whether the president is working for them.
