LYNCHBURG, Va. – For sophomore distance runner Alex Jordan on the Lynchburg Track and Field Team, the 5,000- meter run at the Brant Tolsma Invitational was an unforgettable race. Crossing the finish line in 14:19.15, Jordan not only secured the win for his team but had broken a school record by nine seconds.
The previous mark was set by Ricky Flynn in 2009 at 14:28.98. Despite the weight of this achievement, Jordan remains focused on growing the program rather than on his individual success.
“It means a lot to see my name at the top of the record books…however, the most important thing to me is breaking the record under the current coaching staff. Coach Llanza and Coach Carroll have invested a great deal in this program since taking over this year,” he said.
Jordan credited his breakthrough to the training and investment from the new coaching staff, noting that he feels a responsibility to draw attention to the program’s ongoing development.
“I am happy to bring attention to the program and showcase the amazing coaching staff. I wouldn’t be where I am today without this program,” said Jordan.
Teammates have also said that Jordan’s success on the track comes from his ability to remain calm before an intensely competitive meet. Sophomore distance runner Jack Weddle has watched Jordan’s progression throughout the season.
“The number one thing I’ve learned from Alex is how to keep things chill and turn it on when we need to…He is able to flip the switch when it’s game time to do what he’s got to do,” said Weddle.
Currently ranked seventh nationally in NCAA Division III, Jordan is in a strong position for the upcoming indoor championships. Despite this, he remains grounded and focused as he prepares for future meets.
“We knew going into the indoor season that making nationals was going to be a close call. I am going to keep racing the 5k throughout the indoor season to hopefully keep chipping away at my time and solidify a spot at nationals,” said Jordan.
By breaking the 17-year-old record, Jordan has established a new standard for the program while solidifying his place with Lynchburg’s distance running elites.
