As the semester wraps up and student-athletes at the University of Lynchburg head home for their winter break, many are looking forward to family time, travel, and a chance to reset. Even with the holidays ahead, spring seasons are right around the corner, so rest and preparation must work hand in hand.

Jamie Smith, a sophomore on the beach volleyball team, will be flying home to Oregon, where she plans to spend quality time with her friends and family.

“I’m good at staying in touch during the semester, but it’s exciting, actually, to be back with them,” she said.

Spending time with family while also balancing staying ready for competition isn’t hard for Smith, as she enjoys lifting, going for walks, and staying active in ways that don’t overload her schedule.

“It keeps me in shape without overworking myself, and I still have time for everyone,” said Smith.

For Aidan Casey, a sophomore defensive midfielder on the men’s lacrosse team, break is all about relaxing at home and putting schoolwork out of his mind for a bit. But even as he unwinds, Aidan keeps himself sharp by working out, running, and playing lacrosse every day.

“You have time to relax and take some time off from school. I take time off by not thinking about schoolwork, but I stay in game shape so I am ready to go when we get back,” said Casey.

Sophomore forward on the men’s soccer team, Kohlby Wilson, will also be traveling home, balancing family time, his internship, and soccer training. After a stressful end of the semester, he is excited for a reset.

“It’s nice being home and getting a break from schoolwork. I try to get a good mix of well-deserved rest and still playing my sport,” he said.

As athletes return to the comfort of home, each finds their own way to rest, recharge, and stay competitive. With the spring season approaching, this break offers the perfect chance for student-athletes to recover mentally while also staying physically ahead of their goals.
