Less than eight months after tearing her ACL, University of Lynchburg dual-sport athlete Bree Spainhour is back on the basketball court, already making an impact. The now senior, who was unable to compete in her final volleyball season due to the injury, marked her full return to the women’s basketball team with a 20-point performance after months of rehab and determination.

“Knowing that I was on a time crunch in order to play my final season of basketball helped me be consistent in my physical therapy. Focusing on my accomplishments rather than the ways I was physically limited kept me encouraged,” said Spainhour.

Assistant strength and conditioning coach Holden Fiedler, who trained Spainhour through much of her recovery, said her consistency is what separated her from most athletes.

“Her relentless pursuit of the goal to return ready to play at her highest level stood out most. She put in extra sessions, extra hours. Seeing her succeed now is incredible after all the work she put in,” he said.

Head coach Allison Nichols still remembers the moment she learned Spainhour’s ACL was torn. From there, she focused on supporting her through the recovery process and the unknown timeline.

“Everyone’s recovery is so different. Bree is an extremely hard worker and a winner, and I knew she would attack her return with that same mindset,” said Nichols.

Now that she is healthy, Spainhour’s goals are simply to enjoy every moment of the season and continue to lead throughout her final year on the team.

“I want to leave the program in a better place than when I was a freshman,” she said.

Spainhour’s comeback stands as a testament to her steady discipline and determination. Now that she is fully cleared, she looks ahead to finishing her collegiate career with a measurable impact.
