As President Bush sends more troops to the Persian Gulf, there is more talk about war and conflict, around the country and around campus.
“If there is a war, it will be very long and drawn out, like the Vietnam War,” said sophomore John Cepollina. “It’s going to be a nasty one.”
Some believe that the Persian Gulf War will cause problems for the United States economy.
“A war in the Persian Gulf will send our economy into a big time recession, and considering our economy is already on the downside, a war right now will make the effects on the United States very devastating,” said senior Rick Tyson.
Others feel we should all simply take note at how close war may be.
“I think everybody should wake up and realize what might happen,” said freshman Mark Walters. “A lot of college students get shut off from the real world if they do not read the newspaper or listen to the news and do not see how close we are to war.”
Is war really the answer?
John Eccles, director of residence life, said, “I think it will take great men and women to have the courage to avoid war, because war for any reason is a tragedy.”
“I think there should be no bloodshed for oil,” said Rosemary Urban, SERVE coordinator. “We should immediately begin negotiating a peaceful settlement.”
Junior Tracy Giggetts added, “I’d hoped that this being an enlightened society that by now we would realize the idiocy of war.”
