For Georgia Thompson, writing is more than a skill; it’s a way of helping others find clarity, confidence and their academic voice.

Thompson, a senior political science-philosophy major with minors in public relations and journalism, has taken every opportunity that the University of Lynchburg has brought to her.

From playing softball for the Hornets for three years, to being a Kappa Delta sister, to studying in the Westover Honors College, Thompson has dedicated her time at Lynchburg to growing as a scholar, a leader and a mentor.

As a supervising writing tutor in the Wilmer Writing Center, Thompson supports students through every stage of the writing process while guiding newer tutors and helping to manage the center’s social media. She is also a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society.

Her commitment to public service extends beyond campus. Thompson has completed multiple political internships, including positions with a Virginia state senator, a U.S. representative and a congressional campaign, where she gained hands-on experience in legislative communication, constituent outreach and campaign strategy.

This year, Thompson’s academic excellence and campus leadership earned her a nomination for the University’s highest academic honor, the Somerville Scholar Award.

The Class of 2026 Richard Clarke Sommerville Scholarship Award will be given on November 17, 2025 at 4:00 pm in the Daura Museum of Art.
