At the University of Lynchburg, community isn’t just a concept; it’s a lived experience. From the moment you set foot on campus, warmth greets you in every smile, wave, and open door.
The university’s ‘Here, We’re Home’ slogan captures this spirit of belonging. Beyond words, it’s reflected in daily acts of kindness and inclusion that make the campus more than a place to study; it’s a place to be yourself, supported by a community that feels like family.
Transfer student Kristi Stoneking said she instantly noticed the difference in how people treated each other.
“Everybody here is a lot more accepting of differences than at my last university,” Stoneking said. “If you weren’t part of their target audience, you would get a lot of hate. But here, everyone’s open to hearing your reasoning. It’s so much more inclusive.”
That sense of openness and belonging is something that Heather Bradley, Lynchburg’s vice president of Enrollment and Marketing, immediately recognized even before she stepped onto campus.
“The only reason I applied here was because of the slogan ‘Here, We’re Home,’” Bradley said. “Home has always been an important part of my life, and when I saw that message, I knew this place was worth trying.”
Bradley said she sees that home-like culture reflected in the relationships among students and faculty every day, from mentorship programs to professors who keep snacks in their offices just to make students feel comfortable.
For Arya Nair, a third-year student, that same sense of community made all the difference. “It kind of feels like everybody knows everybody,” Nair said. “In big cities, you’re surrounded by people but still feel alone. Here, everyone’s willing to help. It’s such a small, close community that it really feels like home.”
