Midnight Madness is an annual Homecoming Weekend tradition, which will take place this year Oct. 16 in Turner Gymnasium and feature scrimmages by Lynchburg College basketball teams, an acrobatic performance and The Hornet Hop by President Kenneth Garren and his wife, Sheila Garren, special assistant to the president.
The event begins with each team scrimmaging against themselves. This is the first chance that fans can see this year’s basketball teams play. After they scrimmage both teams go through player introductions, which introduce the programs to the fans and create even more excitement.
“The best part about Midnight Madness is that it is the kick start to the season and it gets the whole school excited, and it’s pretty awesome running out of the locker room under the spotlight,” sophomore forward Caroline Naumann said.
This year will be a little different with a big performance by The Chicago Boyz acrobatic team. They are a professional gymnastics group that made it to the semifinalist stage on season eight of America’s Got Talent. According to their website their performance includes acrobatic stunts and tricks with jump ropes, catapulting off mini trampolines and tumbling routines.
Both LC basketball programs had successful seasons last year. The expectations are high for this upcoming season because of the experience and talent both programs possess.
LC Women’s basketball had a record of 19-9 and a two point loss from winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship.
“My expectations for our team this year are high. We have both experience as well as youth, which I think is great for our program. I am really excited to be surrounded by such hardworking, fun and driven teammates and coaches,” senior guard Sammi Goldsmith said.
The Men’s basketball team won 17 games and lost 10 games last season and finished tied for fourth in the ODAC regular season.
