Known for its sizzling patties and loyal late-night crowd, Bootleggers has earned a reputation as one of Lynchburg’s top burger spots, drawing students, families, and longtime locals alike. Bootleggers offers students a go-to spot downtown for gourmet burgers served in a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere.

First-time visitors to Lynchburg might be struck by the downtown’s charm, where painted train tracks guide them down the stairs to the restaurant beneath a wooden model train. The playful details set a welcoming tone before guests even walk through the door.

While Bootleggers has a reputation for having one of the best gourmet burgers in town, its signature truffle and parmesan fries are also a favorite amongst customers. Rich with savory garlic and a hint of salt, the fries stand strong on their own yet make the perfect companion to the restaurant’s standout burgers.

The truffle and parmesan fries look like they belong in a magazine spread, especially alongside a colorful drink like a Shirley Temple. Bootleggers’ menu offers variety, from burgers to chicken to pulled pork sandwiches, with plenty of room for substitutions and even a build-your-own option.

I ordered a burger topped with pepper jack cheese, pickled jalapeños, caramelized onions, and sriracha ranch. The sauce was served on the side, giving extra control, and its light, spicy flavor perfectly balanced the richness of the other ingredients. Every element complemented the next without overpowering.

For a side, I chose the Caesar salad. While fresh, it leaned more toward store-bought than steakhouse quality, lacking the homemade touch that could elevate it. While the salad isn’t the centerpiece, it works as a simple addition. Personally, I feel that the menu could be strengthened with a bit more attention to the healthier options.

Overall, Bootleggers is a reliable choice for University of Lynchburg students heading downtown, whether they’re new to the city or lifelong residents. The restaurant stands out as one of many spots that showcase the culture and experiences Lynchburg has to offer.
