Nestled in the Dutch Antilles and part of the ABC chain of islands, Aruba is often celebrated for its pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and endless sunshine. But beyond the well-trodden tourist paths, the island offers a vibrant cultural experience, especially in San Nicolas, a local immigrant community bursting with art, history, and charm. San Nicolas embodies Aruba’s authentic soul, from stunning murals that breathe life into the city to mouthwatering meals at hidden culinary gems. The island first stole my heart during my honeymoon, and ever since, it’s held a special place in my travel story.

Here are some of my favorite local spots:

A taste of local life in San Nicholas

Over the years, San Nicolas has transformed into an open-air museum with vibrant murals painted by artists from around the world. The murals tell stories of Aruba’s rich history, folklore, and contemporary issues, blending Caribbean vibrancy with thought-provoking artistry. Walking through the streets of San Nicolas feels like stepping into a living canvas. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just love exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations, these murals offer a fresh perspective on Aruba’s creative spirit.

Oniel’s Caribbean Kitchen in San Nicolas is a must-visit when I am craving a taste of Jamaican cuisine. This cozy eatery serves authentic dishes infused with the island’s warm hospitality. Whether it’s jerk chicken, oxtail, or a plate of perfectly spiced curry goat, every dish is cooked to perfection. The flavors transport you straight to the heart of Jamaica, with the bonus of Aruba’s easygoing atmosphere. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a refreshing sorrel, rum punch, or a ginger beer for the full experience.

After lunch at O’Niel’s, no visit to San Nicolas is complete without indulging in a sweet treat at  local ice cream shop, Kulture Cafe. This hidden gem serves some of the island’s most delicious homemade ice cream. Whether you opt for tropical flavors like passion fruit and coconut or stick to classic favorites like chocolate and vanilla, each scoop is creamy perfection. My favorite is always rum raisin, just beyond scrumptious. The friendly service and laid-back vibe make it the perfect spot to cool off after exploring the town’s artistic streets.

My Favorite Aruban Eats

Aruba’s food scene has become one of my favorite parts of traveling to the island. Each visit feels like a new culinary adventure, full of bold flavors and warm hospitality. While Oniel’s in San Nicolas will always hold a special place in my heart, over time, I’ve found myself drawn to the smaller, family-run kitchens, roadside grills, and hidden gems that serve everything from fresh seafood to comforting home-style dishes. Food in Aruba isn’t just about eating, it’s about connecting with the island’s culture, people, and stories through every bite.

You can find Kamini’s Kitchen just outside San Nicolas and close to the island’s famous Baby Beach. For an authentic taste of Aruban, Trinidadian, and Indian fusion cuisine, this family-run eatery is known for its warm atmosphere and delicious, home-cooked meals. From their roti dishes to fresh seafood curries, Kamini’s Kitchen offers a menu that reflects the island’s diverse culinary influences. This is a place I can return to several times during one visit to the island, the food is made with love, and you can taste it in every bite.

Dr. Lewis at the Flying Fishbone.

A short drive from San Nicolas leads to Savaneta, home to the renowned Flying Fishbone. This restaurant is famous for its unique dining experience, where guests can enjoy their meals with their feet in the water. The setting is magical, especially at sunset, when the sky is painted orange and pink. The seafood-focused menu features fresh lobster, grilled snapper, and flavorful seafood platters. It’s a romantic and unforgettable way to savor Aruba’s coastal beauty. I have celebrated many birthdays and anniversaries at this local gem, and they never fail to disappoint.

The snapper at the Flying Fishbone is always divine.

If you’re looking to splurge, the Restaurant Royal Chef’s Table is a spot we return to whenever we want to celebrate in a truly memorable way. With only one dinner seating each evening and just 19 guests gathered around a U-shaped high-top bar, it feels exclusive when you arrive. You are welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine on the rooftop terrace, setting the tone for an intimate, carefully curated experience.  This is a three and a half hour delight with a playful five-course chef’s menu, with time between each course to unwind, soak in the atmosphere, and chat with fellow guests. It’s more than just a meal, it’s an evening I always look forward to, one my family and I talk about long after we’ve left the island.

Beach Me Baby!

Aruba’s beaches are the kind that stay with you long after your trip ends, with crystal-clear turquoise waters, powdery white sand, and a calm, welcoming vibe that makes it easy to unwind. Each stretch of shoreline has its own personality. With its vast open space and iconic divi-divi trees, Eagle Beach is perfect for a peaceful afternoon. Palm Beach is livelier, lined with resorts, restaurants, and water activities for those looking for a bit more energy. Then there are the lesser-known spots like Baby Beach in the south, where the shallow, gentle water is perfect for floating the day away. No matter where I go on the island, I always find myself drawn back to the sea. For me, Aruba’s beaches aren’t just beautiful, they’re a reminder for me to slow down, breathe deeply, and savor the moment.

A Day at De Palm Island with the Flamingos

Entrance to De Palm Island

For a unique and unforgettable Aruban experience, spending the day at De Palm Island is a must. This private island offers a variety of activities, from snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs to zipping down water slides or simply relaxing in a hammock by the sea. One of the highlights of De Palm Island is the island’s famous flamingos. These elegant pink birds add a touch of tropical charm as they gracefully wade through the shallow waters. Watching them up close, feeding them, and capturing stunning photos creates a magical and serene experience. My best advice is to grab a cabana and soak up the island’s laid-back energy, crystal-clear waters, and all-day relaxation at your own pace.

Magical Sunsets

Sunset from Palm Beach in  Aruba.

Aruba’s sunsets are pure magic, painting the sky with breathtaking shades of orange, pink, and purple as the sun dips below the horizon. Whether you’re watching from the soft white sands of Eagle Beach, sailing along the coast on a sunset cruise, or sipping a cocktail at a beachfront bar, the view is nothing short of spectacular. The island’s clear skies and year-round warm breezes make every evening feel like a postcard moment. The golden glow reflects off the water as the sun melts into the Caribbean Sea, creating a peaceful, almost surreal atmosphere. No matter how often you experience it, an Aruba sunset always feels like nature’s perfect farewell to the day.

Aruba offers more than just a beach getaway; it is a vibrant blend of culture, flavor, and natural beauty. From the soulful rhythms and street art of San Nicolas to the serene stretches of sand and the unforgettable glow of an Aruban sunset, every moment here feels intentional. Whether savoring local cuisine, unwinding on De Palm Island, or simply soaking in the island’s warm spirit, Aruba invites you to slow down and truly experience it all.

If you haven’t been yet, consider this your sign to go. And if you have, you already know, Aruba is always worth returning to. To learn more about Aruba visit: https://www.aruba.com/us
