The end of the semester is finally here, and I hope you are all as excited as I am. Now that the holiday season is in full swing, I am sharing with you all some records I have been listening to that have helped put me in the holiday spirit. I hope you enjoy your break and spend time with those you love. The Hi-Fi Five will be back next semester.

Jose Feliciano, “Feliz Navidad” (1970)
Perhaps the most nostalgic song on this list, I have fond memories of listening to this song while my grandparents would take my sisters and me around the neighborhood to look at holiday decorations. The beauty of holiday and Christmas music is that you can listen to it every year and never tire. I know this song will repeat for me for weeks to come.

Ray Charles & Betty Carter, “Baby It’s Cold Outside” (1961)
Many Christmas songs have had dozens of covers and renditions released over the years, and this one is no exception. Charles and Carter’s soulful sound adds an intimacy and coziness that few other versions create. As a fan of jazz and soul music, I have a strong appreciation for this record, and I hope that you will, too.

Bing Crosby, “White Christmas” (1941)
I have never experienced a white Christmas before, but the idea of waking up to see a blanket of snow outside your house is a joy that I hope I can experience someday. Growing up in Texas, experiencing this would be the same as seeing Santa Claus come down your chimney, but now that I am in Virginia, I hope my chances have improved. I recently found out that this song was first recorded by Crosby just after the attacks in Pearl Harbor, and throughout World War 2 it helped bring a sense of comfort to Americans. Over 80 years later, this song still provides that comfort and warmth.

Andy Williams, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” (1963)
Though this record does not get the recognition it deserves, Andy Williams’ Christmas album is one of the best holiday albums ever. This song, in particular, has such a sense of joy that I had to include it on the list this week. It will give your holiday party that much-needed energy and soul that not many other songs can, in my opinion.

Elmo & Patsy, “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” (1979)
I knew I could not pass it up when I found this record at an antique store years ago. I understand it is a comedy song, but it encapsulates the Christmas spirit so well that I must listen to it every year. Make sure not to drink too much eggnog this year, and if you do, please refrain from wandering out during a snowstorm on Christmas Eve.
