The University of Lynchburg is hosting its annual High School Invitational Exhibition in Daura Museum of Art until November 14th.
The exhibition includes the works of nine high schools around the Lynchburg area and it is a way to showcase the many mediums of production and subjects within art. Students from the high schools are chosen by their teachers to participate. This year, only five were taken from each school. The community can vote on their favorite piece; the top five will receive prize recognition.
“It’s a celebration of both the high school students and their teachers, the people who have been there to inspire and motivate,” said Brooke Marcy, Director of the Daura Museum of Art and the exhibition host.
Marcy later discussed how art unites and how bringing it onto campus allows for a relationship between the college and high schools, noting her hopes for the exhibition to inspire college-level students as well.
Allen TenBusschen, the art department chair at the University of Lynchburg, noted that the high school pieces drive his students toward becoming better artists at the collegiate level.
“I want to do something like that,” TenBusschen recalled his students saying as they viewed the exhibit. “They take some of these ideas and put them into their work, ” TenBusschen expressed alongside his gratitude for the event, noting that the fine arts are still strong on campus. For more information about the exhibition or to view and vote on the artwork, email the gallery at dauramuseum@lynchburg.edu or visit the Dillard Fine Arts Center on campus.
