This Thanksgiving season was a little different than past years. I arrived home after a four hour car drive instead of a 30 minute one.
Each family member greeted me with a big hug, and the dogs scurried around me in excitement. I needed help getting all my bags from the car, instead of just walking in with my one yellow bookbag after a long day at school.
After settling in, I realized my room now had a TV in it, and there were new pictures of me set up around the room.
“We found the TV upstairs, and I got these pictures because I like to come in here and look at them when I miss you,” explained my mom.
This Thanksgiving season was a little different than past years. When Thanksgiving day arrived, everyone was a little more attentive. My cousin and I both were home from college, and everyone had questions for us.
The food did not change though, still filling me up until I was content. The kids still played four-square outside together afterward, and we played board games when my older sister arrived later in the day.
This Thanksgiving season was a little different than past years. I met my best friends after their practice to hang out, instead of practicing with them. Together they told me stories about life back home, and I was not in any of them.
We hugged and said our goodbyes, “See you in three weeks,” instead of “See you tomorrow”.
This Thanksgiving season was a little different than past years. The house is still decorated with the same pictures, manger, trees, and stockings. The fire still turns on at night, warming us as we sleep. My dad is still the first person to wake up and work on my car before I leave.
As I pull out of the driveway and wave goodbye to everyone, a bittersweet thought enters my mind.
