The University of Lynchburg Theatre Department will stage Pippin the Musical for their
Pippin is an award winning musical that follows a young man’s journey in life while finding passion and adventure along the way.
The musical is being directed by Jeff Whitman and Loretta Wittman, who have been in charge of the theatre department for several years with many successful shows under their belt.
Jeff Whitman said, “Our students have invested a great deal of time and energy working on their education and training in acting, singing and dancing. Everyone in the cast came back from the holiday break a week early to have intensive rehearsals in the Hailey Theatre. Our technical theatre students designed and built the sets, made the props, and hung and focused the lights. We have a company of forty students preparing for our opening on Thursday, March 3.”
The cast and team is made up of students from across the university campus. The two leads, Pippin and Catherine, are actually played by music majors.
Pippin, the driven and conflicted protagonist, is played by Bobby Bays, who said, “I’ve had a great deal of fun working with the cast and seeing our progress is very rewarding. Getting to know everyone involved has been a great joy too.”
This talented group have put together their best efforts, though the magic does not happen without some struggle.
Bays notes that his biggest struggle this far has been juggling the responsibility and time management. He said,“I want to give all my effort to the production, so balancing my classes and rehearsals has been the biggest challenge.”
Madison Bakalov, who plays Catherine said, “Pippin has challenged me to learn all of my lines in a timely manner and focus on getting everything down to ensure a great performance, along with allowing me to focus on my acting style and portrayal of my character.”
The production of Pippin the Musical, presented by the University of Lynchburg Theatre department, will open on March 3, 4, and 5 at 7:30pm and March 6 at 2:00pm in Dillard’s Hailey Theatre. Tickets are FREE and general admission, just reserve your tickets and wear a mask!
