Downtown Destinations: Batter Bar

The Batter Bar is one of Lynchburg’s most Instagrammable Downtown destinations. Located next to the Community Market, the restaurant is known for its crepes, espresso, and pastries.

After a wintry walk in the city market, the creperie to the right was just the thing to warm us up.  Upon entering, I noticed the restaurant’s charm immediately.

Murals cover the walls and the booths, featuring little doodles of smiling crepe ingredients such as avocados and strawberries, as well as two personified pastries that appear to be fencing. The kitchen is visible because the walls are glass, allowing guests to see the chefs preparing various crepes and pastries and to see how clean the kitchen is.

There are three types of seating areas inside. There are the booths decorated with cartoon food drawings, rustic tables and chairs, and then the cushioned chairs up the stairs. These comfortable lounge chairs allow customers to sit by the windows and bask in the buzz of the city.

I ordered the sweet Crepe Brûlée, complete with vanilla pastry cream, strawberries, caramel, and torched sugar. My guest and I noticed that the crepes tasted like pancakes with a little extra egg flavor.

My companion ordered the Caprese crepe with prosciutto added, as well as an oats-and-honey latte. She had lived in both France and Italy, so she appreciated the cultural fusion in the dish.

My Crepe Brûlée tickled my tastebud and I finished the entire thing. I think pairing it with coffee would have balanced out the sweetness better than chocolate milk did.

As a student, Batter Bar was a little bit too expensive for my budget to be a frequent visitor, but its perfect for Saturday afternoon photos and people watching, or for a special treat.
