The University of Lynchburg’s athletic training program was spotlighted on Jan. 3 when director Brittany Smith was named 2026 College/University Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Smith and her team were recognized for creating a program that provides student-athletes with support beyond injury care. Trainers provide treatment, mentorship, and guidance, helping athletes succeed physically, academically, and emotionally.
“We love to support them when they need it,” Smith said. “These teams here, they bring us in as part of the family. And I think that’s really important as someone that does this day in and day out.”
To maintain this level of support, the staff manages demanding schedules to ensure every athlete receives attention, even when seasons overlap. Smith and the assistant trainers work together to manage the program’s busy schedules efficiently.
Assistant trainer Stephanie Keator explained how the staff manages overlapping schedules. “The current teams get the hour before practice or game time,” she said. “Whatever that team needs is done in that hour and they can all come in, and other athletes are scheduled throughout the day.”
This approach allows trainers to focus on athletes’ overall needs. Staff often serve as mentors, helping student-athletes navigate physical, academic, and personal challenges.
“It’s rewarding when you get to work them through, not just the physical, but the emotional challenges to get them back to their 100 percent,” Keator said.
