The University of Lynchburg Women’s Volleyball Team has successfully enjoyed a 3-1 record in the team’s brutal four game stretch against ODAC conference foes on the road.
Before this successful stretch, Head Coach Hannah Givens and the volleyball team endured some tough losses.
Givens said, “When looking towards the ODAC tournament, we are still taking one game at a time. If we don’t have that mindset then we will not be able to stay focused and take care of the teams that we need to take care of. I love coaching all of the games because each game brings new information and new accomplishments. I loved the Washington and Lee game (our Code Red game) because the energy in the gym was so much fun.”
After this successful road stretch, nothing has changed, as Givens continued, “We are always looking to stay intentional. The girls do a great job of that, but we are always looking to stay consistent in that aspect.”
During this road stretch, the most impressive win occurred when the Hornets made a historic comeback victory against Shenandoah. Givens stated, “It was a win that we needed to prove to ourselves that we can still come back and turn it on for a reverse sweep and victory. We learned that we cannot walk into a gym and take people lightly. We were also able to have different people step up during a time that we needed them.”
Mya Green, a setter, was really excited after the win against Shenandoah. She stated, “After losing the first two sets to Shenandoah, we had to come out tough and fight for the win. I knew the only way to do this was as a team. If we worked together and encouraged each other on the court, we could take the next three sets. Determination is an important part of this game and you saw that in the last rally of the game. It was the longest rally and we fought to keep the ball in play and won the point and the match.”
To conclude the team’s impressive four game road stretch, the team swept its crosstown rival, Randolph.
After the win against Randolph, Green gave praise to her teammates and entire team, stating, “Playing on the road is tough. All the teams in the ODAC are very competitive, and when we have to travel it puts us at a disadvantage. We are dealing with long bus rides and home team crowds. Our 3-1 winning streak on the road has shown that my team can overcome adversity. When we make mistakes, we learn from them and use that knowledge to win the next point. Being behind and coming back to win matches has shown me that no matter what, my team has the heart to fight for every point, we do not give up and we always support each other.”
